Ayurvedic Treatment for Pre Menstrual Syndrome
PMS is characterized by physiological and psychological changes in the body before or during each menstrual period and is severe enough to disturb a woman’s routine life. According to Ayurveda concept and symptoms can be perceived on the basis of tridosha theory. PMS is diagnosed by using a proper history. No major investigations are required to diagnose PMS. From an Ayurvedic point of view, the symptoms are differentiated based on the dosha involved to choose the right remedy. Prognosis of PMS is good and is quite successful.
Aartava or Menstruation is a phenomenon, which is controlled and governed by Vata and specifically the Apana Vayu, the sub type of the Vata Dosha. According to Ayurveda main cause of menstrual problems are imbalances of Vata Dosha. For balance of vata Dosha externally, oleation with sesame oil and fomentation with herbal decoctions give excellent results. In severe cases, medicated oil enema (anuvasana basti) is very beneficial (e.g.sesame oil and dashamoola kwatha). Second one is shriodhara which is beneficial for psychological symptoms like mood swing, depression,anxiety etc.
In conventional medicine, a definite treatment has not yet emerged as a definition, and the aetiology of the disease is unclear. Symptomatic treatment can be given using
- Sedatives to increase brain chemical like serotonin which are activate the ovarian hormone.
- Diuretics to reduce excessive water retention
- laxatives to treat digestive problem
- Analgesics to reduce pain
- Progesterone or its derivatives
- Oral contraceptive pill to improve hormonal imbalance
