Ayurvedic Treatment for Hyperacidity
There are a variety of medical treatments available for people who are suffering fromAcid reflux. One, and the most popular way, is by taking antacids that can be bought over-the-counter. For those patients doctors prescribe medicine such as Ranitidine, Lansoprazole or Omeprazole to treat hyperacidity. By using these antacids, we can temporiarily neutralize the "acidity" inside the stomach. By this we can relieve for a moment or hours, but this gives message to the body that acid produced inside the stomach is less than the enough and next time stomach produces more acid, with higher strengths?
Most antacid includes a disclaimer on their packaging that customer do not use them for longer than 14 days. So before taking the antacids think twice, what are you doing? Are you treating a disease or making it stronger?
When stomach acid is removed by neutralizing it, body feels a gradual health decline due to malabsorption of nutrients so many symptoms appear in body just like impaired digestion, muscle weakness, fatigue, impaired immune system, constipation, irregular heartbeats, headache, vomiting etc.
As per Ayurveda- hyperacidity, which is known as Amlapitta or Vidagdha Ajeerna in Ayurveda is caused due to irregular eating and other causative factors which you can read on the link-
Amalapitta is told to be of two types as per the dominance of the Dosha. Because this is a Pitta disorder so Pitta is aggravated in this disease for sure so now nature of the disease depends on the other two Doshas- Vata and Kapha.
Once Pitta is associated with Vata it starts creating problems in future with the parts of the body where Vata is dominant like Colon etc. This is a fact that untreated patients of hyperacidity in turn in to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases or Ulcerative Colitis- later on. Colon and large intestine both are the places for Vata Dosha.
Once Kapha is associated with the Pitta, the Acid starts climbing the oesophagus and other related Kapha dominant parts of the body. This is exactly the hyperacidity for most of us and is translated widely as- Heartburn, Acid Reflux, Acid Brash etc.
Ayurveda treats the hyperacidity in two ways-
- By balancing the production of the Acid: Because restriction on the secretion of the acid will cause certain other problems, what modern science is doing. Read once- Side effects of Antacids.
- By strengthening the inner lining of the stomach against the high intensity corrosive acids being secreted by the stomach cells.
Being a common diseases, certain myths are also associated with Heartburn and Acid reflux. One of these is to take as many as bananas with milk and to take the cold food/drinks as much possible. These two are completely false statements and explanations are as below-
