Ayurveda for Bones and Joints

Without skeletal system, we will be like a loath of the meet. This is the skeleton, which provides us the shape, structure and obviously gives us unique identity. This is not all, skeletal system also do some other important works for the body- Covers and saves the most vital organs- Brain, Spinal Cord and Heart too.

Ayurveda has a bit different approach about Skeletal System. According to Ayurveda not only bones, but also the cartilages and teeth are included in the skeletal system, so the number of bones varies in Ayurveda, in comparison to the modern biological sciences. Anyhow number doesn’t matter in treatment; this is the only way to look at the body.

Vata is the main Dosha related to the Bones! There is a lot of Akash Mahabhuta (the ether) in form of the spaces and canals in the bones, and where space there is will be Vata Dosha in the body, because Vata Dosha is a result of Akash and Vayu Mahabhutas. So this is one thing.

Generally as a principle in Ayurveda- when a resident Dosha increases it will directly increase the Dhatu where it is residing for example- when Pitta increases it will increase the Rakta. But in case of the Vata and Bones, it is opposite. Vata increases- bones keep on decaying. So the main cause of a condition like osteoporosis is the Vata increase. This Vata increase might be due to excessive use of the body and too much movement (as it happens in athletes) and it might be as simple as in old age (because by default old age is the period of Vata aggravation).

With joints it is bit different. Joints have a lot of movement so there should be too much Vata and problems should be due to the Vata only. But there is a lot of Kapha (Shleshak Kapha) in form of synovial fluid- which helps to balance Vata in joints because Kapha is quite opposite to the properties of the Vata. Once there will be decay in the synovial fluid in the joints- problems will be aggravated and Vata will cause severe damage. Osteoarthritis is the result of the same condition. These are not only osteophytes in the joints there will be lack of the synovial fluid too in the joints.

So Ayurveda has a clear approach towards the treatment of the Bone and Joint problems. We need to maintain the balance the Kapha and Vata Dosha to maintain the harmony in the body. If one of these will be out of balance- there will be certainly some problems with the joints.

There is one other condition- where joints are affected severely, when body has a lot of toxins. Because there is a continuous supply of the blood surround the joints to maintain the warmth and nutrition of the joints and these vessels are in a mesh, which helps the toxins to sediment in the joints. Conditions like- Gouty arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis are the result of the above system of the diseases. In these we need to check the production of the toxins first in spite of what modern medicine do (just try to remove the toxins, not to check the production of these).

Do Pitta too have an involvement in the problems of the joints? Yes!! The inflammatory conditions of the joints are only the result of the Pitta and in that case we need to maintain the Pitta in normal levels.

So according to the involved Dosha and conditions- all the treatments are planned. This is not only about the condition and the name of the disease. One need to be pretty sure about the aggravated Dosha, that is the only way according to Ayurveda by which one can be assured complete health of the joints and bones.

Main important factor about the skeletal system is- Axial deformities. As we know that skeletal system holds the whole body and make an axis of the body. If there will be some deviation in the axis of the body it will bring a lot of problems for the body. For example- Once a knee is injured and one cannot walk straight- it will cause a strain on the lumbar region of the body- this deviation in lumbar region will cause low back ache and even might cause the condition of slipped disc and then this deviation will be transferred to the neck region and there will be pain in neck region. So problem with one joint will cause problem with the whole body axis, so try to keep your joints intact and healthy!
